Although the death of Liam Payne on October 16 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, initially appeared to be a suicide, local authorities about three weeks later ruled out this possibility.
According to investigators, they believe he did not intend to die, as in the condition he was in, he did not know what he was doing.
"Although some evidence from the victim's medical history remains to be analyzed, the lack of self-defense or self-preservation instincts during the fall, combined with other relevant evidence, leads to the conclusion that he was not fully or fully conscious at the time of the fall", it was said in the announcement.
A forensic examination showed the presence of alcohol, cocaine and an antidepressant in his system at the time of his death.
As part of the investigations that have started, three people have been arrested, accused of abandoning the victim, supplying or facilitating his supply with narcotics.
As foreign media reports, one of them accompanied the 31-year-old singer throughout his stay in Buenos Aires.
In the hours before his death, witnesses speak of three hotel workers and two women who were with the musician in his room but had left at the time of the fall.
"The investigation also seeks to examine the possible involvement of a third person in the events that led to the death of the victim," the relevant announcement states.
However, shortly before the fall, according to testimony from a hotel employee, Payne appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and drugs as he wreaked havoc in his room.
The worker called 911 for help saying, “You've got to send somebody right away because we don't know if he's in danger. His room has a balcony and we are afraid that he might do something threatening to his life.'
Payne was on holiday in Argentina with his partner, Kate Cassidy. In his last post, in fact, a few days before his death, he had posted a video of them having breakfast together and looking in good spirits.
However, on October 14, Cassidy uploaded a video to TikTok announcing that she was returning to the US.
"I'm ready to go. Honestly, I love South America, but I don't like to stay in one place for long. We went for five days, which turned into two weeks, and I was like, I have to go home," she said.
