The spontaneous and seemingly random movements of newborns make sense: this is confirmed by a study which analyzed their movements through a computer model.

Better understanding of how this biological system develops can help us understand the origins of human movement and diagnose any developmental disorders as early as possible.

To reach these conclusions, the researchers recorded the joint movements of 12 healthy newborn babies less than ten days old and ten babies around three months old.

They then estimated the toddlers' muscle activity and sensory input signals with the help of a computer model, and finally analyzed the characteristics of interactions between muscle activity and input signals using algorithms.

"Studies conducted so far have suggested that infants develop their sensorimotor system through fast and focused movements," explains Hoshinori Kanazawa, one of the authors.

The results we obtained show that this is not the case and that their movements "roam" only out of curiosity, in search of sensory-motor interactions.

According to what has been discovered, babies will not repeat the same movement until they learn it, but will perform many and different ones, learning to move in space by exploring it with curiosity.

In addition to better understanding how babies develop, further studies in this area can help determine which behaviors are normal and which, instead, may indicate developmental delay.

"My ultimate goal is to understand the mechanisms underlying motor development and promote child development," concludes Kanazawa.
