8 tons of aluminum cans, to achieve such a weight it takes more than 1.5 million. At one point, the parents even ran over them with a car to crush them and make them more compact. However, the effort was worth it: in the end they received more than 20 thousand dollars in 3 years, money that he donated all to charity.

This is the story of Ryan Hulance, a young man who decided to raise money for food banks and care for the environment at the same time. From his home in Solihull, in the West Midlands region of the United Kingdom, he began contacting various companies to ask if they could donate cans for recycling.

He started this initiative in 2023, collecting a few hundred cans a week and storing them at home. Rather than dismissing it as a strange idea and waiting for the passion to pass, his parents decided to join him. They crushed the cans to save space, even driving over them, before Ryan put them in the bags.

As in the US, British scrap companies pay 10 to 50 cents for a pound of aluminum. Last year alone, Ryan managed to collect 8 tons of cans, raising about $7,300 for a charity that helps women.

“Sometimes I think I would rather be playing video games with my friends, since I’m only 13,” Ryan told the British news agency Southwest News Service. “But actually, when I think about it, I really like what I do because it gives me the opportunity to help people and families in need.”

Over the past three years, Ryan has recycled about 1.5 million cans, raising nearly $20,000, every cent of which has been donated to charity. His initiative has garnered so much attention that his family has been gifted an industrial baling machine, which packs the cans into large metal bales for easier transport and storage.

"We are very proud of Ryan," said his mother, Karima Hulance.
