Astronomers have spotted a mysterious radio signal that took 8 billion years to reach Earth. It is one of the most distant and most energetic signals to reach our planet in years.

These radio signals are strong and typically last for milliseconds, or one-thousandths of a second. The first such signal was detected in 2007, and since then, hundreds of such signals have been detected from various points in the universe.

According to the study published in the journal Science, the most recent signal, named FRB 20220610A, lasted less than a millisecond but emitted energy equivalent to what the sun emits over 30 years.

Many of these signals disappear immediately after the waves they emit, which makes it difficult to track and study them. Radio telescopes have helped astronomers in this process, managing to discover the origin of the signals.

The signal in question is known to be emitted by a group of two or three galaxies that are merging with each other, the researchers say. Scientists believe that these signals are a unique method that can be used to "weigh" the Universe, measuring the matter between galaxies.

"Through new methods of capturing radio signals we can build a map of the structure of the Universe and use it to answer big questions about cosmology," Ryan Shannon, study co-author and professor at Swinburne University of Technology, Australia.
