Some books never leave the conversation — and according to Goodreads readers, one classic novel stands above the rest.

In the platform's list of the greatest literary novels of all time, "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen takes the top spot, ranking ahead of other important novels such as "1984" by George Orwell and "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" was written in 1813 and yet it continues to read as if it was published yesterday.

At its center is Elizabeth Bennet, one of the most beloved characters in literature, intelligent, ironic and independent, who tries to find her place between social expectations, family and a not-so-simple relationship with Mr. Darcy. She recognizes her own worth and refuses to be a victim of compromise. Two characters who confront themselves, with prejudices and with the way they see each other.

Of course, this ranking reflects the votes and preferences of Goodreads users and in no way excludes the fact that literature has many other masterpieces that may be equally, or even more, important to many.

Goodreads is one of the world's largest book platforms, where millions of readers provide ratings, comments, and create lists based on their preferences.

The other books on the list are as follows:

2- "1984" - George Orwell

3- "The Great Gatsby" - F. Scott Fitzgerald

4- "Jane Eyre" - Charlotte Brontë

5- "Crime and Punishment" - Fyodor Dostoevsky

6- "Lolita" - Vladimir Nabokov

7- "Wuthering Heights" - Emily Brontë

8- "Of Mice and Men" - John Steinbeck

9- "The Count of Monte Cristo" - Alexandre Dumas

10- "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" - Mark Twain
