The environmental expert, Abdulla Diku, in an interview on "Abc e Mêngjesit", raised the concern about the disease that is destroying the chestnuts, the cancer disease.
He explained that the disease is devastating and that it infects the trunk, branches and bark, but not the fruit.
"Chestnut is one of the most emblematic woods, with a history of thousands of years. In many countries of the world, chestnut wheat is called the wood of the god, blessed wood, bread and dairy wood, that is, labels because it has served both as bread and as a very important element to overcome major crises in the world", said the expert. of the environment.
He also emphasized that chestnuts have more carbohydrates and nutritional value than potatoes and that Albania is considered a country with good sources of chestnuts.
"Chestnut cancer is a popular disease and the most common way of spreading is fungal spores and they are very easily transported through the air, birds, animals. These spores enter the fresh cracks of the bark and pass between the bark or the log and impede the movement of nutrients. Then the wood begins to dry until the branch or trunk is no longer in a vegetative state. And then the spores continue to spread around the trees, infecting other trees as well", he explained.
However, the environmental expert explains that the disease is treatable and completely manageable.
