The four-day working week, most British companies will keep in place forever

Most companies involved in the world's biggest trial of a four-day work week have made it a permanent policy, according to a new report. Of the 61 British companies that took part in a six-month pilot, at least 54, or 89% of them, said the policy was still in place, while 31 firms - 51% - said they had switched permanently to a four-day working week.

The companies involved were invited to take part in a follow-up study one year after the world's largest trial of a shorter working week to date. The results, published by think tank Autonomy, showed that all project managers and CEOs consulted said a four-day week had a positive impact on their organisation, with more than half describing the impact as very positive.

The vast majority, 82% of companies surveyed reported positive impacts on staff wellbeing, while 50% saw positive effects in reducing staff turnover and nearly a third – 32% said the policy had significantly improved recruitment.

Juliet Schor, the report's author and a professor of sociology at Boston College, described the one-year results as excellent and said the findings showed that the positive effects of shorter work hours were real and long-lasting.

Physical and mental health and work-life balance are significantly better than at six months. However, the report found that staff at firms where the extra day off was only partially guaranteed, or provided on the condition that certain targets were met, had some concerns.

For example, four-day workweek patterns that were highly contingent resulted in increased reporting of stress to meet deadlines, resentment toward others, and feelings of inequity among employees based on the nature of their role. The report added that less committed forms of the four-day working week policy also left staff less able to plan activities on their days off.
