A recent study by the University of California found that the radiation emitted by devices commonly used to dry gel nail polish is dangerous. According to him, UV light can cause damage to skin cells and DNA.
"Our study shows that there is a potential risk especially for people with higher sensitivity to UV light," said Maria Zhivagui, a researcher in the Alexandrov laboratory at the University of California.
To better understand the effects of radiation from UV light dryers, Dr. Zhivagui and her colleagues exposed human and mouse cells to radiation and found that when the cells were exposed to light for 20 minutes, they were damaged at a rate of 20% to 30%. Exposure for three 20-minute sessions led to a 65% to 70% probability of cell death and caused irreversible DNA damage
"The health risks associated with this aesthetic service include nail infections, irritation and redness of the skin from the chemicals used, as well as breathing problems that come from the nail dust found in salons," she said.
Some preventative measures that everyone can take before their next esthetician appointment include:
1.Apply sunscreen beforehand to minimize exposure to UV radiation.
2. Go to a salon with a good reputation and quality ventilation systems.
3. Ask about hygiene and disinfection rules before starting the procedure.
4. Avoid painting your nails if you have any "open" cuts, wounds or scratches on your skin.
5. Avoid excessive cutting of the cuticles, as it increases the chances of infection.
