Britain's Heathrow Airport, Europe's busiest, was closed on Friday after a major fire at an electrical substation caused power outages and the cancellation of hundreds of flights to and from Heathrow.
Images shared on social media showed large flames and smoke billowing from the substation in Hayes.
10 vehicles and about 70 firefighters fought the flames at the scene, while about 150 residents living near the substation were evacuated. In the entire area, 16,000 homes are reported to be without power in the area. The lack of electricity at the airport led to the cancellation of 1,350 flights. In a statement, the airport itself announced that the closure will last throughout Friday and is in the interest of the safety of passengers and airport staff. "Passengers should not travel to the airport under any circumstances until the airport reopens," the statement said.
January was the UK's busiest month ever, with more than 6.3 million passengers passing through, up more than 5% on the same period last year. January was also the 11th consecutive month with an average of more than 200,000 passengers a day. Heathrow's temporary closure brings to mind the delays at British airports in 2023, when the UK's air traffic control system suffered a fault, slowing down take-offs and landings across the country.
