Ukrainian President Zelensky said Kiev may invite a Russian delegation for a second peace summit. According to a Ukrainian media poll, over 40% of Ukrainians support the start of peace talks.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said his government aims to prepare by November a peace plan for a second international summit to end the war in Ukraine. Ukraine held a summit in Switzerland last month, which was attended by representatives of 92 countries, but not Russia.

"I think Russia's representatives should be present at the second summit," Zelenskiy said after returning from a visit to Washington, where he attended a NATO summit.

Russia had previously criticized the summit in Switzerland, saying any discussion that did not include Moscow was "absurd".

Over 40% of Ukrainians are in favor of starting peace talks with Moscow

According to a poll published by the Ukrainian weekly Dzerkalo Tyzhnia, over 40 percent of Ukrainians are in favor of starting peace negotiations with Russia.

The survey did not include residents of the Crimean Peninsula, which was illegally annexed by Russia in 2014, and other areas in the east and south of the country that are controlled by Russia.

According to the poll, 43.9% of Ukrainians in areas controlled by Kiev think "the time has come to start official peace talks between Ukraine and Russia", 35% were against starting negotiations and 21% were undecided.

Regional differences

In the southern regions of Ukraine, the greatest support for the start of peace talks was found, with around 60%. While in the central regions, almost half of the residents were in favor of the negotiations.

In the west of the country - considered the center where the Ukrainian-speaking population lives, which has traditionally voted for Ukrainian nationalist and pro-Western parties - only 35% of the population were in favor of starting peace talks with Moscow.

The lowest support for negotiations was registered in the eastern regions of Ukraine, where only 34% of the population were in favor of negotiations.

The majority of respondents against Putin's proposals

Despite being in favor of peace talks, 83% of respondents are against demands made in June by Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war.

Putin said Russia would agree to a ceasefire and enter peace talks if Ukraine withdrew its troops from four regions in the south and east that Moscow claims it has annexed. Of the four claimed regions, only Luhansk is largely controlled by Russian forces.

The Russian president also demanded that Kiev give up any ambitions to join NATO. According to the survey, almost 59% of the population are against the inclusion in the Ukrainian constitution of an article on the country's neutrality and military non-commitment.
