Corey Comperatore, a firefighter by profession, was one of the participants in the rally held by former US President Donald Trump in Pennsylvania who lost his life after the shooting.
He is regarded by the local community as a hero because during the shooting he protected his family and lost his life.
Comperatore's daughter Allyson later wrote on social media how her father had thrown her and her mother to the ground and shielded them from the falling bullet.
“He really loved us enough to take a bullet for us. And I want nothing more than to cry over him and say thank you," she wrote. Allyson described her father as "the best father a girl could ever ask for."
The death of former fire chief Corey Comperatore has also affected his colleagues.
"I don't want to get into politics, and it just scares me that there are people who get so extreme on this issue. The way they operate is causing chaos by taking innocent lives, but honestly, I don't have much to say about it."
Witnesses and family members described how Comperatore acted after hearing the shots. His actions exemplified his lifelong commitment to protecting others, a trait that endeared him to the community.
"He was a great man who deserves honor and respect at the highest level. He wouldn't want us to be sad, he would hate it. I have known him and only here and other people speak so well of him. He saved his family because of his love and passion for his profession."
In Comperatore's honor, the Fire Department has worn its uniform to honor him. Buffalo Governor Josh Shapiro has also ordered state flags to be flown at half-staff to honor the fallen hero.
"Corey was a firefighter, a churchgoer and most of all, a devoted family man," said Governor Shapiro.
The local community has also launched a GoFundMe campaign where they have so far raised over $830,000 to support the family during this difficult time.
