As federal investigators try to determine the motivation behind the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, a former classmate of 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, the man identified as the would-be assassin, is shedding light on his temperament.
Jason Kohler told reporters he went to high school with the author and described him as a recluse.
"As a child he was always alone. He was always bullied," Mr Kohler told reporters on Sunday.
He added that he had not had much communication with would-be killer Crooks, who was targeted for the way he dressed or the fact that he continued to wear a mask after the COVID mask requirements were lifted.
Law enforcement officials said Sunday that they found bomb-making materials in suspected gunman Crooks' car and home, and that the AR-style weapon he used was purchased by his father.
