Vladimir Shklyarov, the Russian ballet star, has died aged 39 after falling from a building.
St Petersburg's Mariinsky Theater says the dancer was taking painkillers for an injury and fell from the fifth floor. He was 39 years old.
Shklyarov died after falling from the fifth floor of a building on Saturday, a spokesman for the Mariinsky Theater told the Fontanka newspaper at the weekend.
Spokeswoman Anna Kasatkina told Russian media that Shklyarov had been taking painkillers for a back injury and was scheduled to undergo spinal surgery on Monday.
While a federal investigation has been launched into the dancer's death, the "preliminary cause" has been ruled an accident, Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported.

Born in Saint Petersburg in 1985, Shklyarov joined the Mariinsky Theater in 2003 and became its principal dancer, the highest position in a ballet troupe, in 2011.
"Our condolences to the artist's family, loved ones, friends and all the many admirers of his work and talent... he forever etched his name in the history of world ballet," the ballet troupe said in a statement.
Throughout his 20-year career, Shklyarov starred in productions of Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet, Sleeping Beauty, Don Quixote and Liza in Wonderland. He performed all over the world, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York City and the Royal Opera House in London.
In 2013 he married another Mariinsky Theater dancer, Maria Shirinkina, with whom he had two children.

Shklyarov condemned Russia's invasion of Ukraine in a since-deleted Instagram post from March 2022, declaring his opposition to "all kinds of military actions".
"It is impossible to look at everything that is happening today without tears," Shklyarov wrote at the time.
Unlike Olga Smirnova, a talented Bolshoi Ballet dancer who fled Russia and moved to Europe, Shklyarov continued to perform in Russia and refrained from further commenting on the war.
