A police officer who works as part of the close protection team of the prime minister, Rishi Sunak, has been arrested because he placed a bet on the day of the early elections.

The Metropolitan Police were contacted by the Gambling Commission last Friday, who informed the force that they were investigating bets made by a constable from its Royal Family Protection Command and Specialists.

The officer was subsequently arrested on charges of misconduct in public office.

He was taken into custody and released on bail pending further enquiries.

The matter has also been referred to the Independent Police Conduct Office.
