Tragedy in Mecca, over 550 believers die due to the heat

At least 550 worshipers have died due to extreme heat during the Hajj, the main Muslim pilgrimage in western Saudi Arabia. It is known that most of them were Egyptians.

The annual pilgrimage, which was held from Friday to Sunday, took place as the planet's hottest temperatures were recorded.

The temperature in Mecca reached 51.8 degrees Celsius.

"323 pilgrims from Egypt have died, the vast majority due to very high temperatures," two Arab diplomats, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told AFP on Tuesday.

"They all died because of the heat, except for one who died after being injured when he was trampled by a crowd," said one of the sources.

The Hajj, one of the world's largest religious gatherings, is one of the five pillars of Islam, and believers who are able must make the grand pilgrimage at least once in their lifetime.

But this religious gathering is increasingly suffering the consequences of climate change. A Saudi study published in May suggested that temperatures in places where ceremonies are held are rising by 0.4°C every ten years.

Saudi authorities had advised worshipers to use umbrellas, drink plenty of water and avoid exposure to the sun during the hottest hours of the day.
