Vuçi mb defends China's purchase of missile system: Guarantees peace
Aleksandar Vucic

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic in an interview with the "Financial Times" spoke about the agreement with China on the purchase of missiles, saying that "the pact guarantees peace in the Balkans."

Despite EU objections, Vucic defends the purchase of the missile system.

Regarding the attitude towards Russia, the Serbian president says that "they will not take sides" and that they will defend their interests by not bowing to pressures and ultimatums to impose sanctions on Moscow.

Serbia, which is a candidate country for EU membership, has long historical, political and economic ties with Russia, which also supplies gas to Belgrade.

"We have some protections (from Russia). What are you looking for (Western countries)? "Should we abandon our national interests because someone is asking for something for themselves?" Vucic replied.

Vucic's comment comes just months after he won another five-year term. Numerous analysts express concern that Belgrade is leaning towards Russia and China despite pressure from Brussels.

EU leaders have publicly stated that they see Serbia as a future member of the union, but privately show growing frustration with ties with Moscow and Beijing.

Such an approach apparently comes because Brussels fears the fact that a strong line to the Balkan countries could lead to water in the mills of Russia and China.

Recently, Serbia has purchased the FK 3 anti-missile system from China, and this is seen by the West as an increase in Beijing's influence.

Possession of Chinese weapons is not against EU regulators, but makes it difficult or impossible to participate in joint military exercises.

Vucic says Serbia has bought other weapons, including French fighter jets and drones from Turkey.

According to him, this is part of the efforts to guarantee stability, as neighboring countries have also bought weapons.

"We have informed all Western partners, including the US, about the purchase of FK 3s," Vucic said.
