A rumored successor to El Mencho's $20 billion crime empire has been identified as an American with a $5 million bounty on his head.

Drug lord Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, was killed on Sunday during a special forces military operation.

Foreign media write that his death has caused chaos throughout Mexico, while the JNGC responded with fire and fury by closing roads and forcing tourists to flee.

A new contender seeking to take over power from El Mencho's reign of terror has emerged as his adopted son.

Juan Carlos Valencia González is widely considered the "de-facto second in command" of the JNGC.

He has helped lead the cartel group into one of Mexico's most powerful and fastest-growing criminal organizations.

Also known as El Pelon, Tricky Tres, and O3, Juan Carlos, is a dual American and Mexican citizen. He was born in Santa Ana, Orange County, in 1984, while his cartel-affiliated parents lived in California.

His mother, Rosalinda “La Jefa” González Valencia, was a key player in the financial side of the cartel, according to law enforcement.

While she may take over from her late husband, most experts agree that she will support her son as successor.

His suspected drug connections were first revealed during a Drug Law Enforcement Administration investigation in 2020.

An investigation revealed that he was responsible for the production and sale of tons of narcotics and had been linked to violent crimes since 2007.

He was identified in footage showing the armed wing of the Jalisco Cartel by the former Mexican defense secretary in July 2020.

The Sun writes that, in October of that year, the US government returned a federal indictment charging him with conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance and use of a firearm during a narcotics transaction. The US also put a $5 million reward on his head for information leading to his arrest or conviction.

His requested biography says he is 5' 11" (170 cm) tall, weighs 177 lbs (77 kg) and has brown hair and eyes. Juan Carlos was also named to the National Counterterrorism Center as the cartel's second-in-command before his stepfather was killed. Despite being nominated for the top job, some are less convinced.

El Mencho's older brother, Antonio Oseguera Cervantes, was taken into custody in the US last year along with 28 other cartel leaders. The drug lord's son, Ruben Oseguera-Gonzalez, was also sentenced to life in prison plus 30 years in prison after being captured.

He was forced to hand over $6 billion in cash last year for his crimes. It comes as the death toll from the day of violence following El Mencho's killing has reached 73. Panicked tourists were seen trying to flee the country through Guadalajara airport as cartel gunmen stormed the terminal, firing guns and sending crowds running for cover.

Across the city, cars burned and thick clouds of smoke rose into the sky, transforming Guadalajara into a war zone. Residents and visitors were urged to stay indoors as gunfire echoed through the streets for hours. The violence spread to at least 20 of Mexico's 31 states, as the country reeled from the death of its most wanted man.

OnlyFans model María Julissa has even been accused of giving police information about the notorious crime boss's whereabouts before his death. Julissa has been forced to deny that she was the secret girlfriend who led authorities to the couple's love nest over the weekend. Mexican media reported that the pair were in a relationship, which the social media star quickly denied.

But a banner threatening Julissa was hung by alleged cartel members in Mexico this week. The banner read: “ B***h Maria Julissa. You bit my hand that feeds you, you sent the Marines after Celos because they stole your truck .”
