Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi

Less than a week ago, Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi was the Israeli army's top lawyer, in charge of law enforcement within the country's armed forces.

Now, she is under arrest as part of a criminal investigation into the leak of a video showing serious abuse, including sexual abuse, of Palestinian detainees in a notorious Israeli military prison.

Targeted for years by the Israeli right, her rapid downfall has become a national scandal, overshadowing the very video at the center of the issue.

The scandal began in July 2024, when Israel Defense Forces (IDF) legal authorities opened an investigation into soldiers who were allegedly seen sexually assaulting a Palestinian detainee arrested during the war in Gaza.

The investigation and arrest of the soldiers sparked a fierce political backlash, with some right-wing members of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition joining protests and riots outside the Sde Teiman prison and military court where the soldiers were sent.

The video was first broadcast on Channel 12 in August 2024, but it wasn't the only report raising concerns about conditions at the base. In May 2024, CNN spoke to three whistleblowers who described abuse at Sde Teiman. A month later,

Israel announced that it would begin a gradual closure of the facility. However, this did not dampen the campaign of attacks on the army's top lawyer.

On Wednesday, Tomer-Yerushalmi was suspended from her post as military attorney general, after Israel's Attorney General, Gali Baharav-Miara, announced the launch of a criminal investigation into the leak.

Two days later, Tomer-Yerushalmi resigned, admitting that she had approved the release of the video and taking “full responsibility for any material that came out of the unit to the media.”

In her resignation letter, she writes that a "campaign of incitement" against her had reached its peak after the decision to investigate the Sde Teiman soldiers.

“This campaign still continues today and is severely damaging the IDF, my image, and the resilience of its soldiers and commanders,” she wrote.

For the right wing of the Israeli government, the resignation and investigation were not enough. Hours after her resignation, Defense Minister Israel Katz said he would take “all necessary sanctions” against her, including stripping her of her rank.

Katz, who issued more than seven statements against her in a week, accused her of involvement in a “bloody false report” against the soldiers, even though the authenticity of the video has not been questioned and five soldiers were charged in February 2025 with detainee abuse. They deny the charges.

Netanyahu called the leak "an extraordinary blow to reputation," describing it on Sunday as "the biggest public image disaster in Israel's history."

National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir called her behavior "criminal under the guise of law" and called for a special prosecutor to investigate the leak.

Then, Tomer-Yerushalmi disappeared. For several hours on Sunday, the Israeli army and police were unable to find the woman who until a few days ago was the IDF's most powerful lawyer. The army announced that it would "use every means possible" to find her as soon as possible.

After an extensive search, she was found on a beach north of Tel Aviv. In the evening, police arrested her on suspicion of several charges: fraud and abuse of office, abuse of official power, obstruction of justice, and leaking information as a public official.

She has not yet been formally charged and has not given a statement. The next hearing is scheduled for Wednesday. Her lawyer declined to comment.

Tomer-Yerushalmi is also suspected of deceiving the Supreme Court and senior military and judicial officials regarding the video leak and of submitting a false statement to the court.

Along with him, other senior officials of the military prosecution are also suspected of involvement in the leak and its cover-up.

Police say there are five suspects. Meanwhile, the Palestinian detainee at the center of the case has returned to Gaza as part of a U.S.-brokered ceasefire, raising questions about whether the soldiers' trial can proceed without the victim's testimony.

The case has become part of Netanyahu's coalition's broader attack on the judiciary.

Justice Minister Yariv Levin is trying to prevent Attorney General Baharav-Miara from investigating the case, suggesting that her role should also be investigated.

" Anyone who has a conflict of interest cannot be part of the investigation ," he said./ Tch
