Iran's government called an "emergency meeting" on Monday after it was announced that President Ebrahim Raisi and the country's foreign minister were among those killed in the helicopter crash.

According to Iran's state news agency IRNA, the chair where Raisi usually sits was empty and wrapped in a black sash in memory of the president.

The time and details of a mourning procession will be announced later, state media FARS News Agency reported.

Meanwhile, military analyst Cedric Leighton told CNN that bad weather played a key role in the downing of the helicopter that killed Iran's president, Ebrahim Raisi.

"Fog, rain, temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius. There is a possibility at higher altitudes of rotor blade freezing. There is a possibility of potential engine failure," he said.

Leighton added that the plane's maintenance would also have played a role, showing how Iran has been living under sanctions and using old equipment to transport their high-level leaders.

"The other factor in this would be maintenance, whether or not the helicopter was properly maintained," he added.

Meanwhile, Iranian state broadcasters are airing Islamic prayers between their news broadcasts following the announcement that President Ebrahim Raisi and eight others died after the helicopter they were traveling in crashed in Iran's East Azerbaijan province.
