Hurricane "Hilary" is headed for California

The west coast of southern California is in constant danger due to the strength of Hurricane Hilary, which is fast approaching.

The US National Hurricane Center warned that the storm will cause catastrophic, even life-threatening flooding.

The National Hurricane Center has warned that Hilary will hit Southern California on Sunday as a rare tropical storm, bringing flooding, strong winds and downpours as residents begin to evacuate, parks and beaches close and emergency forces deploy in readiness for the first rescues of people.

Hilary is now a Category 1 storm with maximum sustained winds of 144 km/h as it moves towards San Diego at 28 km/h.

The storm is expected to dump 7.62 to 15 cm of rain, while power outages are also at risk for many people.

The worst is expected today and tomorrow, so California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency Saturday for much of Southern California to support hurricane response and recovery efforts.

"We are mobilizing the entire government as we prepare and respond to this unprecedented storm," Neesom said.

Although Hilary is expected to move north from Baja California to Southern California on Sunday afternoon, its impacts will be felt earlier.

"Preparations for the flood impacts associated with Hilary should be completed as soon as possible as heavy rainfall will begin well ahead of the center," the National Hurricane Center said in a statement.

Parts of California, Nevada and Arizona that aren't used to rain could see a year's average or more fall in two days.
