Former US President Donald Trump seems to have entered a dead end with justice. Recently, he is accused of raping a communist almost 3 decades ago.

Trump has denied E Jean Carroll's allegations that he sexually assaulted her in a Manhattan store. He said that she made this claim for publicity. Although this is not a criminal matter, the consequences for Mr. Trump could nevertheless be serious.

If Carroll wins the trial, it would be the first time the former president — who has been the subject of more than two dozen such accusations — would be found legally responsible for a sexual assault.

Trump is facing a wave of other legal problems, including more than two dozen criminal charges for paying hush money to an adult film actress and an investigation into his alleged role in the U.S. Capitol riots on January 6, 2021.

What are the charges?

Carroll, 79, says the attack happened at a Bergdorf Goodman store in Manhattan in late 1995 or early 1996.

The pair had bumped into each other while shopping, she said. Trump then allegedly asked her for advice when buying underwear for another woman and jokingly asked her to model them. But once in the locker room, Carroll said Trump lunged at her, pinned her against a wall and assaulted her. She didn't report the alleged encounter to police, her complaint said, because she "was in shock and didn't want to think of herself as a rape victim."

Two of Ms. Carroll's friends, Carol Martin and Lisa Birnbach, said the writer told them about her trauma a few days later. Martin and Birchbach are on the list of witnesses Carroll may call to testify.

What did Trump say?

Trump has issued multiple denials in the years since Carroll came forward with her allegations in 2019.

He has described her claims as a "total hoax" on his social media platform Truth Social, saying the alleged rape "never happened". And during an October deposition on the case, Trump repeated his denials, adding that his accuser is "not my type."

It is still unclear whether Trump will appear during the trial, which is expected to last up to two weeks.

He is not required to attend, and Carroll's attorneys have said they do not plan to call him as a witness.

Why is it a civil case?

The statute of limitations on this matter has long since expired.

And typically, the statute of limitations for people to file civil sexual assault lawsuits in New York is three years, which means that it, too, has long since expired.

But in 2022, New York passed the Adult Survivors Act, which allowed a one-year window for victims to file sexual assault lawsuits in the state for claims that would otherwise have exceeded the statute's limitations. Carroll filed her lawsuit against Trump almost immediately after the law took effect. Prior to this case, the writer had also sued Trump for defamation after he called her a liar after her memoir was published. That lawsuit is currently stalled as the courts debate whether there is a legal right to sue former presidents.
