India will overtake China in terms of population, according to the United Nations. India's population is expected to reach 1,425,775,850 people by the end of April, new data shows. Asian nations have made up more than a third of the global population for more than 70 years.
"China will soon relinquish its status as the world's most populous country," the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) said in a statement. China's birth rate has been declining recently, with its population shrinking last year for the first time since 1961.
China's population may drop below 1 billion before the end of the century. In contrast, India's population is expected to continue to grow for several decades,” DESA said. In November, the global population passed 8 billion. But for experts, growth is not as fast as it used to be and is now at its slowest pace since 1950.
