United States President Donald Trump stated that his administration is in talks with Cuba, but stressed that the priority remains ending the situation with Iran.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said negotiations with Cuba were continuing, but that Washington would initially focus on developments in Iran.

"We are talking to Cuba, but we will end up with Iran before Cuba," he declared.

Meanwhile, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel confirmed on Friday that talks are underway between the two countries, aimed at easing tensions and finding a solution to long-standing disputes.

Trump also stressed that many of his supporters in South Florida expect changes in relations between the US and Cuba after decades of political hostility.

He has referred to the island several times since January, when the US military ousted former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and brought him to the US to face drug trafficking charges.

For many years, Venezuela has been one of Cuba's main financial supporters. Trump said recent developments could lead to an agreement soon.

"I think very soon we will either reach an agreement, or we will do what we have to do," the US president said.
