Trump speaks for over an hour on the phone with Putin: He said he will respond
Donald Trump / Vladimir Putin

US President Donald Trump says he had a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin that lasted an hour and 15 minutes.

Trump says they discussed Ukraine's attack on multiple air bases deep inside Russia over the weekend and revealed that Putin said he would have to respond to the attack.

Trump referred to the call as a "good conversation," but claimed it was not a development that would lead to immediate peace.

It is the first time the US president has spoken to his Russian counterpart in just over two weeks, since their last phone call on May 19. That conversation lasted two hours and Trump described it at the time as "great."

Trump's message after his phone call with Putin:

I just finished speaking on the phone with the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin. The call lasted approximately an hour and 15 minutes. We discussed the attack on Russian planes from Ukraine, as well as various other attacks that have occurred on both sides. It was a good conversation, but not one that will lead to immediate peace. President Putin said, and very strongly, that he will have to respond to the recent attack on the airports.

We also discussed Iran and the fact that time is running out for Iran’s decision on nuclear weapons, which must be made quickly! I told President Putin that Iran cannot have nuclear weapons, and on that, I believe we agreed. President Putin suggested that he would participate in discussions with Iran and that perhaps he could be useful in reaching a quick conclusion. My opinion is that Iran has been slow in its decision-making on this very important issue and we will need a final answer in a very short period of time!
