A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 on the Richter scale was recorded at 01:50 on Wednesday morning in the maritime area between the islands of Crete, Kasos and Karpathos, causing concern among residents.
The earthquake caused concern among residents of the southern Aegean islands and eastern Crete, where it was particularly felt, although its epicenter was at a depth of 60 km.
It was also felt in some areas of Attica and along the coast of Turkey. There are no reports of injuries or material damage, while seismologists say that despite the strength of the tremor, there will be no further earthquakes.

Meanwhile, a message was sent to residents via the 112 number warning of a tsunami and requesting them to leave the coast.
The head of OASP, Efthymios Lekkas, emphasized that this is an earthquake that occurred right on the Greek arc, that is, in the place where the European and African tectonic plates collide, and that it has absolutely no connection with the earthquakes in Santorini or with the earthquake that occurred in Turkey.
Despite Heraklion's relatively large distance from the epicenter, the earthquake was felt as three "waves" of varying intensity and with the sensation lasting for at least 15 seconds.
