At least 90 dead from Hurricane Helene in the US

A total of 90 people have died as a result of Hurricane Helene, which has hit the southeastern United States. Authorities are continuing to search for more bodies as Hurricane Helene caused extensive property damage, including destroyed roads and bridges and flooding from Florida to Virginia.

The storm is characterized by strong winds and rain and has hit North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee and Virginia.

Officials have said they fear they will find more dead bodies.

The communication network has been damaged in many areas and hundreds of people have still not been able to contact their families, who have registered them as missing.

Damages from the powerful storm are estimated to range from $15 billion to more than $100 billion, as authorities said important communication and transportation lines were damaged. However, authorities said the real value of the damage will be known after authorities clear the affected areas and assess the damage.

In North Carolina, almost all of the fatalities were reported in Bunkombe County, where 30 people died, according to authorities.

"This is a disaster of historic proportions," Gov. Roy Cooper told CNN. "People I've talked to in western North Carolina have told me they've never seen anything like it."

He added that search and rescue teams from 19 states and the federal government have been dispatched to the state.

Nearly 2.7 million customers across the southern US were without power on Sunday, the US Department of Energy said, or 40 percent fewer than on Sept. 27.

In South Carolina, 25 victims have been reported, in Georgia 17 and in Florida 11, according to the authorities in these states.

Citing state and local officials, CNN reported that the total death toll is 93.

The US President, Joe Biden, plans to visit the affected areas this week, the White House has announced.

"It's tragic," Biden told reporters the day before, vowing to provide recovery aid to the affected states, REL writes.

Hurricane Helene slammed into Florida on Thursday evening, with furious winds and rain that destroyed homes and other infrastructure.
