NATO will not protect Cyprus in the event of a Hezbollah attack: In an interview with THE US media network CNN, alliance leader Jens Stoltenberg made strong assertions about the recent threats of the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.
The head of the Iran-backed organization said earlier this week that the movement he leads would react to what he described as Cyprus' intervention in the Middle East conflict by allowing Israel to use Cypriot airports and bases for military purposes. Stoltenberg stressed that Cyprus is not a NATO ally, meaning that it does not benefit from the North Atlantic alliance's defensive umbrella.
"I don't think it's fair to speculate, but I think it's important to prevent that happening," he said. A few days ago, Israel came forward with the claim that it had authorised and finalized operational plans for a ground and air offensive in Lebanon.
Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz later said Israel was close to a decision to "change the rules" regarding Hezbollah and Lebanon, warning of an all-out conflict and significant consequences for the militant group. But Cypriot government spokesman Konstantinos Lympiotis rushed to state a little later that his country "is not involved" and "will not participate" in any war, noting that the Republic of Cyprus has excellent relations with Lebanon.
