In the third part of the exclusive audio recordings owned by journalist Milaim Zeka, which are being published serially on his YouTube channel, a disturbing moment emerges from a telephone conversation between the lead prosecutor in the case against Hashim Thaçi, Alan Tieger, and businessman Halit Sahitaj - involved in this process as a witness.
For the first time, Sahitaj confides his serious concerns following the statement he gave in The Hague in October 2020, as part of the trial for the alleged crimes of former KLA leaders.
“I told Mr. Bennett that I gave a statement as a witness at that time, but I want to make a clarification… Things have happened to me that are terrible,” Sahitaj is heard saying in the recording. “These are very disturbing things for my life, for the life of my family and for the work of the prosecutors in The Hague,” he adds.
This episode follows the developments revealed in the second part of the recordings, where Sahitaj had indicated that he had met with a senior American official, while emphasizing that he had not asked to withdraw the statement, but only to offer an explanation due to new developments that had personally concerned him.
Whether the climate of fear the witness speaks of will receive wider international attention remains to be seen.
