Hantavirus on cruise ship alerts WHO, Tedros heads to Canary Islands

The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, is traveling to the Canary Islands to coordinate procedures related to the arrival of the MV Hondius cruise ship, following reported cases of hantavirus on board.

The ship is currently sailing towards Tenerife and is expected to dock on Sunday. According to local authorities, disembarkation of passengers is expected to begin from midday on Sunday until Monday, depending on weather conditions.

According to the latest report from the World Health Organization, six cases of hantavirus have been confirmed out of eight suspected cases. The victims include a Dutch couple and a German woman. Three other people were evacuated earlier to Cape Verde.

Tedros will be accompanied to Tenerife by the Spanish Ministers of Health and Interior, with the aim of coordinating health checks and implementing inspection and intervention protocols.

However, the World Health Organization has stressed that the risk of hantavirus spreading in the population remains “extremely low.” The organization’s spokesman, Christian Lindmeier, stated in Geneva that the virus is dangerous for infected people, but does not have the potential for widespread spread like COVID-19 or measles.

"Close contact means practically nose to nose. This is not a new Covid," he stressed.
