The owner of a funeral agency was sentenced to 20 years in prison for selling

A former owner of a funeral agency was sentenced to 20 years in prison for defrauding relatives of the dead by cutting up 560 corpses and selling body parts without permission. Megan Hess, 46, pleaded guilty to fraud in July last year.

Her mother, Shirley Koch, also pleaded guilty to fraud and was sentenced to 15 years. Koch's central role was dismembering bodies, court records show.

" The conduct of Hess and Koch caused great emotional pain to families and relatives ," the filing states.

She deceived the relatives of the victims by telling them that she would burn their bodies but cut them up and then sell them. Prosecutors said surgical training companies and other firms that bought certain body parts did not know they were obtained through fraud.

26 people described their horror when they discovered what had happened to their loved ones. "Our sweet mother, they tore her apart," Erin Smith said of her mother, whose shoulders, knees and legs were sold for profit.
