The increase in cases of Covid-19 in China, today the EU announces new measures

EU decisions on a common approach to deal with the coronavirus outbreak in China are expected to be made today.

The decisions could include mandatory masks and tests before passengers leave the country, EU health officials agreed yesterday.

The vast majority of countries support pre-departure screening.

Such measures would be in contrast to the recommendations of the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), which said that screening rules and travel restrictions are not justified by the data so far.

Which countries have imposed measures?

Several European countries, including Italy, Spain and France, have imposed mandatory testing on flights from China. On the other hand, Belgium decided to continue with the analysis of planes arriving from China, to detect any new variants of the virus.

As a precaution, the US and several other countries - including Italy, Japan and Israel - have announced they will require travelers from China to be tested for the virus. South Korea made a corresponding decision on Friday, which will remain in force until February 2023.

France and Britain have announced they will require travelers from China to show a negative test 48 hours before departure. The measure will be implemented from January 5 in Britain, while from the first days of January in France. Spain requires a "negative test" or "certificate of full vaccination".

Germany has proposed setting up an "observatory" of Covid variants at European airports, without imposing tests on travelers from China. Switzerland has indicated that it does not plan to increase the screening of passengers from China. The precautions taken by many countries are "understandable" due to the lack of information from Beijing, WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.

China threatens countries that crack down on its travelers

"We believe that some countries' restrictions on the entry of travelers from China have no scientific basis and some excessive measures are unacceptable," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said at a regular press conference on Tuesday.

"We strongly oppose attempts to manipulate COVID-19 prevention and control measures to achieve political expediency, and China will take relevant measures based on the principle of reciprocity in different situations," Ning said.
