The Trump administration will cap the number of refugees admitted to the US at 7,500 and give priority to white South Africans.
The move, announced in a notice published Thursday, will take effect for the next fiscal year and marks a dramatic reduction from the previous limit of 125,000 set by former President Joe Biden.
Although no reason was given for the reduction, the announcement said it was "justified by humanitarian concerns or is otherwise in the national interest."
In January 2025, Trump signed an executive order suspending the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program, or USRAP, which he said would allow U.S. authorities to prioritize national security and public safety.
