The US could take control of the Strait of Hormuz

US President Donald Trump said on Monday that the United States could take control of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important sea lanes for global oil and gas trade.

In a phone interview with Fox News' "Fox & Friends," Trump said the US is likely to take responsibility for the security of the strait.

"We will hold the strait and maybe manage it. We will become the custodians of the strait. Maybe we will call it the 'guardian angel of the strait.' And we should be compensated for that," he declared.

The US president's statement prompted an immediate reaction from Iran.

The Khatam al-Anbiya Central Command, the highest Iranian military coordination structure, issued a statement warning that Tehran will not allow US interference in the management of the Strait of Hormuz.

According to the statement, the Iranian armed forces will react harshly to any action that, in their opinion, violates Iranian control over the passage of commercial ships in the area.

Iranian authorities also warned countries in the region not to cooperate with the US on this issue, stressing that any logistical or military support for Washington would be considered an act against Iran's sovereignty and national security.

"If the war expands to the region, its flames will engulf all countries in the area," the statement published by Iranian state media said.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the most strategic corridors in the world, as a significant portion of global oil exports from the Persian Gulf countries passes through it.

For this reason, any tension in this area is followed with concern by international markets and global powers.
