US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has criticized European countries for what he called an "invasion" of migrants on their shores, during a speech in France on the anniversary of the historic Allied landings in Normandy, writes the BBC.

Hegseth spoke in Normandy, 82 years after the D-Day operation, when Allied forces landed on French shores to liberate northwestern Europe occupied by Nazi Germany in 1944.

"Unfortunately, today other European beaches are being attacked by other dangerous ideologies," Hegseth declared. "Beaches in Spain, Italy, Greece and Bulgaria. Boats and men arrive every day. When will European capitals do something about this invasion?" he said.

Hegseth's comments follow similar statements by other US officials. Most recently, Vice President JD Vance criticized the UK's migration policies, linking them to serious criminal cases, statements that prompted reactions from the British government.

Speaking in France, Hegseth said that some European countries have become too “comfortable” with the freedoms gained after World War II and have forgotten that “freedom has a cost.” According to him, the current generation of leaders must defend the values ??for which Allied soldiers fought in Normandy.

Migration to Europe remains a major political challenge. According to international data, the peak of sea arrivals was recorded in 2015, when over a million people crossed the Mediterranean to enter the continent. Although the numbers have fallen significantly compared to that period, the issue continues to dominate political debate in many European countries, while parties supporting tougher immigration policies are increasingly gaining support in the polls.
