Russia on Friday night launched a Soyuz rocket carrying a probe bound for the moon, returning its first mission to the natural satellite in nearly 50 years.

The rocket carrying the Luna-25 probe lifted off at 02:10 a.m. Moscow time from the Vostochny cosmodrome in the Far East, according to images broadcast live by the Russian space agency Roscosmos.

The launch of the Luna-25 probe is the first lunar mission for Moscow since 1976, when the former Soviet Union was a pioneer in space exploration.

An achievement that has faded due to funding problems and corruption scandals.

According to the Russian space agency, Roscosmos, the device will then have to spend three to seven days in this orbit to choose the right place before landing in the lunar south pole area.

According to a Roscosmos source contacted by AFP, the agency plans to land the probe around August 21.

"For the first time in history, the moon landing will be carried out at the lunar south pole. So far, they all landed in the equatorial zone," said a senior Roscosmos official, Alexandre Blokhine, in a recent interview with the official Rossiyskaya Gazeta newspaper.

President Vladimir Putin has vowed to continue Russia's space program despite sanctions, citing the example of the USSR, which sent the first man into space in 1961, amid escalating East-West tensions.
