This year too, Angela Merkel did not want to give up the premiere of the Bayreuther Festspiele in Bavaria.
Accompanied by her husband, Joachim Sauer, the former chancellor appeared in great spirits, above all with perfect hair and bright make-up.
Merkel takes great care of her hair and appearance. So much so that since 2021, when he left office, he has spent almost 55,000 euros on hairdressing and makeup.
Not from her own pocket, of course, but from that of the government and the German taxpayer.
The revelations of the Tagesspiegel newspaper caused some controversy in Germany, which forced the Berlin chancellery to reveal documents related to its expenses.
According to the newspaper, no former chancellor has spent as much as Merkel after leaving office.
The controversy is caused precisely by the hairdresser.
The former chancellor appears to be paid for the services of a professional from Berlin, a well-known hairdresser and stylist, who not only does her hair and make-up when she is in Berlin, but also accompanies her to her meetings in Germany and abroad.
The bill for 2022 was 37 thousand 780 euros, while in the current year the expenditure so far has been 17 thousand 200 euros.
On average, 3 thousand euros per month for the former chancellor to look beautiful.
The Association of German Taxpayers strongly criticizes the excessive costs for these purposes.
"It is difficult to explain to those who pay taxes that they also have to cover the expenses for politicians' make-up artists and hairdressers," said president Reiner Holznagel.
According to him, these "must be reduced to the essentials".
But Merkel is not the only one using public funds for hair and makeup.
Hair and makeup seem to be very important even for the current chancellor. Scholz, despite having very little or no hair, in 2022 spent almost 40 thousand euros on hair and makeup.
This year, 21,808 euros have already been spent.
A parliamentary inquiry carried out a few months ago has revealed that in the first year of the Scholz government, the total expenditure on photographers, hairdressers and make-up artists rose to 1.5 million euros.
This figure, which results in 80 percent more than in 2021, Merkel's last year in power.
