Moscow has pulled its old military equipment out of storage, including T-55 tanks, a model first ordered by the Soviet Union's Red Army in 1948, shortly after the end of World War II.

"The Y 55 was the main battle tank used by the Soviet Union in the Cold War era," said historian John Delaney, senior curator at the Imperial War Museum (IWM) in Duxford, Cambridge.

"When Russia started retiring its T-55s in the 1980s, there were still more than 28,000 of them," Delaney said.

"The Soviets never threw anything away. A significant number of them are expected to be restored," he said.

Satellite images show Russia has taken dozens of tanks from a depot in Arsenyev in Russia's Far East.

“The T-55 tanks have been there for a decade or more. They will need significant work to get them back to good working order,” said Delaney.

Russia has not confirmed it is deploying the T-55 to its front lines, and Moscow's Defense Ministry did not respond to CNN's request for comment.

But, in recent weeks, photos have been distributed showing these tanks in the territories occupied by Russia in Ukraine.

According to the Dutch defense analysis website Oryx, there is visual evidence that Russia has lost more than 1,900 tanks since the invasion began, nearly two-thirds of an initial fleet of about 3,000.
