In Boston, USA, brain surgery was performed on a baby in the mother's womb. According to CNN , a group of doctors at the children's hospital in Boston have successfully performed brain surgery on a baby that was still in the womb, the first time such an operation has been performed in history.

Doctors diagnosed the rare disease called "vein of Galen malformation" when the baby was 30 weeks old.

The operation, published in the scientific magazine "Stroke" of the USA, was carried out with the method of discovering the artery using ultrasound.

Doctors used ultrasound to guide a long needle through the mother's womb to the part of the baby's brain that was affected. Doctors then injected a substance into the vein with the goal of preventing backflow into the vein.

By performing the operation successfully, the doctors saved the unborn baby from developing serious diseases such as neurological disorders and heart failure that would cause death after birth.

Dr. Darren Orbach, from Children's Hospital in Boston, said that if the disease is not treated in the baby, after birth it can cause significant problems such as brain damage and heart failure.

Soon after birth, 50 to 60 percent of all babies with the disease develop serious problems, Orbach said, adding that the disease has a mortality rate of about 40 percent. However, about half of the babies who survived experienced serious mental and neurological problems.

Doctors emphasize that the baby named Denver, who was born on March 17 immediately after the operation, after about a two-month period is still healthy, does not use drugs for cardiac insufficiency (insufficiency) and does not need additional interventions.

This is the fourth pregnancy for the American couple Derek and Kenyatta Coleman, who were diagnosed with the problem in the 30th week of pregnancy and a month later the intervention was performed.

"On March 15, exactly one month after the ultrasound that revealed the malformation, the operation was performed. The child immediately showed signs of improvement. The baby was born promptly on March 17, at 34 weeks. I heard him cry for the first time and I can't describe in words how I felt at that moment," recalls the baby's mother.

"Now, almost two months after birth, the baby continues to be fine and spends most of his time sleeping and eating and does not seem to need any further intervention," the mother concluded.
