Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan demonstrated his strength with a grand rally held Sunday at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport ahead of next Sunday's election.

Under extremely tight security measures, hundreds of thousands of people filled the square with flags and placards in hand at the airport showing their support for the 69-year-old president.

"Istanbul" cheered Erdogan in front of 1.7 million people who were present at the rally who were holding Turkish flags and banners dedicated to the president.

Over 10,000 buses brought the supporters to Istanbul, a meeting that Erdogan called "the rally of the century".

During his speech to the crowd, the president called the opponent 'drunk', 'infidel' and accused him of dividing the country.

While the opposition candidate during his rally promised to calm down and unite the country. He added that he will put an end to authoritarianism.

President Erdogan is facing the toughest race as his popularity has been hit by inflation and he faces criticism over his government's handling of the devastating February 6 earthquakes that killed more than 48,000 people in southern Turkey.

Millions of Turks will vote on Sunday, May 14 to elect the new President of the country, but also the new Parliament. Elections in the Presidential Republic are held on the same day as Erdogan, who is seeking a third presidential term, but this time against a strong rival.

According to the latest polls, Erdogan and opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu are in an almost equal vote situation and will probably go to a runoff on May 28.

Analysts are worried about the opposition of the result in case of defeat for the President, as happened in the past elections for the municipalities of Istanbul and Ankara.
