A powerful earthquake killed at least 126 people in Tibet on Tuesday and left many more stranded, while dozens of aftershocks shook the high-altitude region of western China and Nepal.

State broadcaster CCTV published statements from regional officials who said in a brief press conference that about 200 people were injured.

CCTV footage showed rescue workers in orange suits climbing through piles of rubble. State media said more than 1,000 homes had been destroyed.

The US Geological Survey said the quake had a magnitude of 7.1 and was relatively shallow at a depth of about 10 kilometres. China said the quake had a magnitude of 6.8.

The epicenter was about 75 kilometers northeast of Mount Everest, which straddles the border between China and Nepal. The area is seismically active and is where the Indian and Eurasian plates collide, causing uplift in the Himalayas enough to change the heights of some of the world's highest peaks.

About 50 aftershocks were recorded in the three hours after the earthquake, and the Mount Everest scenic area on the Chinese side was closed following the quake.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping called for all-out efforts to rescue people and house those left homeless.

CCTV said a small number of communities live within 5 kilometers of the epicenter, which is 380 kilometers away from Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, and about 23 kilometers from the region's second largest city, Shigatse, known as Xigaz in Chinese.

The average elevation in the area around the epicenter is about 4,200 meters, the China Earthquake Networks Center said in a social media post.

In Nepal, authorities asked officials in the mountainous area near the epicenter to search for casualties or damage. / VOA
