Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday that the quadrilateral declaration signed at the Sharm el-Sheikh Summit on Gaza the day before could mark a new milestone on the path to lasting peace in the region.

"We showed strong determination in Sharm el-Sheikh. I hope that the quadrilateral declaration we signed with US President Trump, Egyptian President Al-Sisi and the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim, will be a new milestone on the path to lasting peace in our region," Erdogan declared.

Addressing an event of his Justice and Development (AK) Party in the capital Ankara, Erdogan said steps for the reconstruction of Gaza would be discussed and decided together with the US and Gulf countries.

Erdogan says his country will have a special role in the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, while confirming that it will also cooperate with America.

"Gaza's recovery is likely to take years. There is a construction period and a revitalization period. Turkey has an important task in both construction and revitalization. Of course, this will be discussed and debated together with the Gulf states, starting with the United States, and we will decide on the steps we will take on this issue. Our wish is that yesterday's significant step will be crowned with a lasting and just peace. Undoubtedly, the only way to achieve this is the establishment of an independent, sovereign and territorially intact Palestinian state, based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital," the Turkish President added.
