Republican officials have accused Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky of meddling in US electoral politics and "campaigning" for presidential candidate Kamala Harris after he visited a weapons factory in the state of Pennsylvania.

Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro gave Zelensky a tour of the Scranton Army Ammunition Plant over the weekend, where the two signed off on 155 mm artillery shells that will likely be sent to Ukrainian troops.

Republican officials have criticized the photo, as well as Zelensky's recent interview with the New Yorker magazine, in which he criticized former President Donald Trump and Ohio Sen. JD Vance, the party's nominees in November's presidential election.

"Zelensky is openly campaigning for Democrats in the Pennsylvania battleground today, some 50 days after our presidential election. Unreal,” Missouri Sen. Eric Schmitt wrote on X.

Pennsylvania Representative John Joyce told a local radio station on Tuesday that the visit was "a political stunt," judging by its "suspicious" timing.

A group of nine House representatives led by Lance Gooden of Texas have called for an investigation into Zelensky's visit. The Ukrainian leader flew to Pennsylvania on a US Air Force C-17 military plane and was given Secret Service protection paid for with US taxpayer money, Republican lawmakers said in a letter to the Pentagon's inspector general. , Robert Storch.

"There is concern that these resources were used for purposes unrelated to US national security or bilateral diplomacy, but to support a politically important visit before a major US election," said the letter, which was shared with Washington Examiner.
