House Republicans plan to vote next week on charges against President Joe Biden's son Hunter for disrespecting Congress. The accusation comes after the President's son defied a congressional subpoena to appear for a closed-door testimony last month.

Republicans who run the Oversight Committee and house Judiciary Committee announced friday the vote as the Republican Party moves into the final stages of its investigation to verify whether there are grounds to bring charges to dismiss the president. If the commissions approve the charges, they will be voted on later by all House members.

"Hunter Biden's deliberate refusal constitutes disrespect to Congress and compels us to refer him to the appropriate U.S. Prosecutor's Office for prosecution," Republican Reps. James Comer and Jim Jordan said in a joint statement. "We will not offer him special treatment because of his surname."

Hunter Biden and his lawyers have repeatedly criticized the Republican's call to give closed-door testimony, arguing that information from those interviews can be made public and deliberately manipulated by severing only scissors from the testimony. Biden's son has insisted he will only testify publicly.

"It is clear that the Republican chairs of the committees are not interested in providing the facts or they would allow Hunter to testify publicly," his lawyer, Abbe Lowell, said in a statement. "On the contrary, House Republicans continue to play politics by demanding an unprecedented motion of disrespect for Congress against someone who has offered to answer all their questions in the first place."
He added, "What are they afraid of?"
For months, Republicans have been conducting an investigation to verify whether there is a connection between the Democratic president to his son's business dealings. So far, Republican lawmakers have failed to uncover evidence directly implicating President Joe Biden in any wrongdoing.

While Republicans say their investigation is ultimately focused on the President, they have shown particular interest in Hunter Biden and his business dealings abroad, which they accuse the President of personally profiting from. Republicans have also focused much of their investigation on allegations some whistleblowers have made of interfering in the Justice Department's long-running investigation of the president's son's taxes and ownership over some of his guns.

Hunter Biden's hearing scheduled for Wednesday will be held a day before he is scheduled to appear in court for the first time on charges of his tax returns filed by a special prosecutor in Los Angeles, California. He faces three felonies and six counts of tresses, including filing a false statement and tax evasion.

His lawyer accused special counsel David Weiss of succumbing to "Republican pressure" in the case. /VOA
