The gesture of the Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who decided to pay the bill of 80 euros of some Italian tourists who left without paying from a restaurant in Berat, has aroused quite a bit of controversy.

Meloni has been praised for the gesture, commented on as putting Italy's honor in place, but political rivals see it differently.

Commenting on Meloni's visit to Albania, former Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said: "We hope that next year Meloni will make an equally successful campaign for Italian tourism, as he did for the Albanian one".

Asked about paying the bill, he said:

“Qeveria po mundohet të sillet si ai prindi, që e gjen djalin/vajzën të dehur dhe shkon e merr me taksi falas. Meloni dha 80 euro për një familje shqiptare. Ne kemi dhënë për vite të tëra me radhë shumë 80-eurosha për miliona familje italiane”.
