The Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group announced on Syrian public television, after taking control of it, the fall of the "tyrant" Bashar al-Assad.
They said they had released all prisoners held "unjustly" and called on citizens and fighters to "protect state property."
This was reported by Al Jazeera. The military command of the opposition forces said in a statement that:
" We must all unite and cooperate to present the best image of our revolution and our people at a historic moment."
Nine people appeared on the public television screen and one of them read a press release attributed to the "operational cell for the liberation of Damascus," which announced "the liberation of the city of Damascus and the fall of the tyrant Bashar al-Assad ."
" We also announce the release of all prisoners unjustly held in the regime's prisons ," the statement said.
But there is no mention of the fate of President Assad.
