Today, Russia has more defenses in the Arctic than anywhere else in the world, and this is closely linked to its ambitions in the region.
According to the head of the security department at the University of Alaska, Troy Bouffard, Vladimir Putin sees the Arctic as the main source that will turn Moscow into a global superpower.
Russia has threatened NATO with a possible conflict in the Arctic, adding that Sweden and Finland's membership in the North Atlantic Alliance would only worsen the situation.
Also, the Russian agency TASS reported that Putin is concerned about the interventions of non-NATO member states in the Arctic, as well as their increased military activity in the area.
"The internationalization of NATO's military activities in the Arctic, which includes non-member states, can not be without cause for concern. "And in this sense, they could turn into a risk of unintentional incidents, along with increased security risk, and this could cause serious damage to the fragile Arctic ecosystem," said Russian diplomat Nikoali Korchunov.
According to him, the recent military exercises in this area led by Norway, have contributed to a security destabilization in the region.
President Putin himself last week threatened a possible military conflict if the two Nordic states decide to join NATO.
Which countries are part of the Arctic?
The Arctic Council is an important intergovernmental forum that includes 8 member states: Russia, USA, Canada, Iceland, Finland, Norway, Denmark and Sweden.
5 out of 8 Arctic Council countries are part of NATO.
Russia is currently chairing the council.
With the start of the war in Ukraine, all member states have boycotted board meetings and since then the situation in the region has been in constant tension.

Why is the Arctic so important to Russia?
Russia currently owns most of the territory in the Arctic and has long seen the region as its golden opportunity for economic development.
There are several reasons for this.
But on the other hand, given Putin's continued threats, even their possible membership would be accompanied by military conflicts that would jeopardize their security.
Europe seems to be at an inevitable geopolitical crossroads, which stems from two very different reasons - on the one hand are the personal ambitions of world leaders while on the other are the dependence of modern societies on natural resources such as gas or oil.
Russia's ambitions to return to the stage as a superpower and important international factor, along with the inevitable forces of nature seem to be pushing the most important global players to reconsider all their previous strategies.
