The Basic Public Prosecution Office in Skopje has requested that the former Deputy Prime Minister of North Macedonia, Artan Grubi, be taken into custody "as soon as he is arrested" as a suspect in embezzlement while in official duty.
She said in a statement that the detention measure should be implemented "immediately after the location and arrest" of Grubi, who is believed to be abroad.
On the morning of December 16, North Macedonian Police said they raided the homes of Grubi and former Lottery director Përparim Bajrami.
As part of the investigations and raids at various locations, including the homes of Grubi and Bajrami, evidence was obtained that raises suspicions that the two defendants, as responsible persons in the Joint Stock Company, State Lottery, during 2023, caused "damage to the Association's budget in the amount of over 8 million euros, by illegally appropriating assets."
The acquisition of illegal property by an official while on duty is punishable by imprisonment from six months to five years, according to the Criminal Code of North Macedonia.
In addition to Grubi e Bajram, the suspects also include former Macedonian Prime Minister Dimitar Kovačevski. “The criminal complaint was submitted to the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Skopje… One of them is a former prime minister, one is a former deputy prime minister, one is a former director of a legal entity, one is a former secretary general, the rest are civil servants working for one of the legal entities,” said Interior Minister Pance Toshkovski during a press conference on Monday.
Grubi and Bajrami were not found in any of the raided houses. Toshkovski called on Grubi to return to the country.
"I would like to believe him when he said he is as clean as a tear, and I even call on him to return to (North) Macedonia if he has not yet returned and to enable the institutions to carry out the investigative process and ensure justice," said Toshkovski.
Previously, Grubi announced that he had not fled, but was abroad "for a private visit."
"I traveled with my documents and my personal police security has been notified. As soon as I complete my obligations, I will return home, to my family. Please do not slander and speculate," Grubi wrote in a Facebook post.
Macedonian Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski told Grubi on TV21 on Monday that former Deputy Prime Minister Grubi, along with a businessman, left North Macedonia for Kosovo in a car with diplomatic license plates on Sunday.
Grubi, earlier, after being blacklisted by the US, announced his withdrawal from political and public life.
On December 11, the Skopje Prosecution Office also announced that it had launched an investigation against Grubi, and the judge of the Court of Appeals, Enver Bexheti, in order, as it said, to establish whether they bear criminal responsibility, after the US Department of State (DASH) accused them of being “involved in high-level corruption and accepting bribes to obstruct” the judicial processes related to the conviction of Sasho Mijalkov, former director of the Directorate for Security and Counterintelligence (DSK).
Grubi has denied being involved in corruption. /Rel/
