Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris reopened yesterday with a grand ceremony after more than five years of restoration work.

The Archbishop of Paris, Laurent Ulrich, opened the doors of the cathedral during a solemn event attended by around 3,000 guests - after the iconic building was partially engulfed in flames in April 2019.

Approximately 40 leaders and dignitaries, including German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, British heir Prince William, US first lady Jill Biden, US president-elect Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, attended the reopening of the 850-year-old Paris monument.

"Tonight, the bells of Notre Dame are ringing again," French President Emmanuel Macron said in a speech inside the church.

The cathedral, in the heart of the French capital, was engulfed in a fire in 2019, which destroyed the entire roof structure, the tower and part of the upper vault. The cause of the fire remains unknown.

Macron recalled the anxious hours when the cathedral was on fire and the concerns that the place of worship could be completely consumed by the flames.

"Fortunately, it was possible to extinguish the fire," Macron said.

"We decided to rebuild Notre Dame de Paris, now even more beautiful, within five years," he said.

"This was made possible through a great collective effort," Macron added.

"A brotherhood of those who have donated from all continents, all religions, all means, united by hope and gathered within its walls," he said.

After the fire, more than 840 million euros were raised in donations to restore the iconic monument, and reconstruction work began in 2021 after a long cleanup phase.

Archbishop Ulrich presided over the religious ceremony, with the event scheduled to conclude with a concert featuring pop and classical music stars, including Chinese piano legend Lang Lang.

However, it was Trump's presence - on his first trip abroad since his victory in the November presidential election - that drew the most attention at the event, as the president-elect met with Macron and Zelensky at the Élysée Palace.

The unique reopening of the cathedral was a welcome distraction for Macron, who is facing a political crisis in the country.

The French president is in the process of choosing a new prime minister - after the previous government was ousted this week in a vote of no confidence.
