Poland has deployed around 40,000 troops to its borders with Belarus and Russia ahead of the joint military exercises Zapad-2025, Polish television TVP reports.
The move comes after nearly 20 Russian drones crossed into Polish airspace overnight, some of which were shot down by Polish and Dutch fighter jets.
Warsaw had already closed all border crossings with Belarus for the duration of the exercises, but after the drone attack, the government announced that the border would remain closed "until further notice."
Moscow and Minsk plan to try out offensive scenarios, including an attack on the Suwalki Gorge, the strategic land corridor between Poland and Lithuania.
Officials in Warsaw and Kiev warn that the Russian-Belarusian exercise "Zapad-2025" could be a cover for real aggression plans.
