Charlie Kirk, a conservative activist and one of US President Donald Trump's allies, has died in hospital.

The American president himself wrote a post on social media, saying: "The Great, even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead."

"The Great, even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Young in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my condolences go out to his beautiful wife Erika and family. Charlie, we love you!" Trump wrote.

Charlie Kirk, leader and co-founder of a conservative youth organization, Turning Point, was shot during an event at a college in Utah.

According to videos posted on social media by Utah Valley University, Kirk is shown adjusting his microphone while sitting in a white tent, with the slogans "American Comeback" visible behind him.

A single gunshot is then heard and Kirk is seen placing his right hand on the wound, while the footage shows him bleeding from the left side of his neck.

After this, the gathered spectators are seen fleeing the scene.
